Mission Series:  Hermes

Divinam Masculinitatem Inter Astra --

"Divine Masculinity Among the Stars”

The Hermes Mission Series will consist of experiments examining male reproductive health factors in space environments. In ancient Greek mythology, Hermes was the messenger of the gods, one of the gods of male fertility, and a lover of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, desire, pleasure and fertility.  Hermes was often depicted in art and literature with a winged hat and sandals, and carrying a musical lyre. He was recognized as the mediator between mortal humans on Earth and the mighty gods and goddesses of Mount Olympus.

The Hermes missions will consist of experiments meant to address spaceflight environment impacts to the male reproductive system, fertility, sexual response, hygiene, hormones and more. These missions will seek to build on knowledge gained during previous male reproductive experiments conducted by NASA and other national space agencies aboard the International Space Station – such as Micro--11 in 2018, which studied male gamete functions in microgravity. Data gathered from the Hermes experiments will inform solutions and protocols to sustain and optimize human male reproductive health off-world.
