Mission Series:  Eileithyia

Liberi Nostri Nascentur Inter Astra --

"Our Children Will Be Born Among the Stars”

The Eileithyia Mission Series will serve as the last of three major SHARP research phases on mammalian reproduction in space, establishing human reproduction parameters for future long-term settlement of other planets in our own solar system and beyond. In ancient Greek mythology, Eileithyia was the goddess of childbirth, midwifery, and protection of the newborn.  She was often depicted as the midwife assisting at the birth of Athena and other deities.  Her name means "she who comes to aid" or "relieve" from the Greek word elêluthyia.

The Eileithyia missions will be comprised of carefully measured experiments conducted in Low Earth Orbit, to validate safety and viability parameters established by previous Cosmouse and Paniscus missions for human reproduction in space. The impacts of the spaceflight environment on each successive stage of human gestation will be studied on separate missions, with intensive pre-flight, in-flight and post-flight analyses to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all mothers and infants involved. Nominally, the final Eileithyia mission will include humanity’s first sanctioned conception, full-term pregnancy, and live delivery/birth beyond our home planet of Earth – verifying that our species can successfully reproduce and settle successive generations on the surfaces of new worlds.
