Mission Series:  Hera

Sicut In Terra, Sic In Caelis -- “As on Earth, so in the Heavens”

The Hera Mission Series will encapsulate numerous Earth-based analog habitat missions meant to study psychosocial crew dynamics and interpersonal sexuality factors in controlled, non-flight environments, meant to simulate space/non-Earth surface conditions.  In Greek mythology, Hera was the goddess of marriage, women and family, and was wife of Zeus and queen of the gods of Olympus. Hera was also associated with childbirth and the mother of Eileithyia, the Greek goddess of childbirth and protection of the newborn.

ASRI’s organization of SHARP’s analog missions under the Hera Mission Series is meant as a nod to the legacy of NASA’s ongoing Human Exploration Research Analog (H.E.R.A.) habitat missions. While many of SHARP’s projected experiments are designed for orbital spaceflight missions, ground-based experiments conducted in analog environments will serve a crucial role in optimizing flight experiment design and mission planning.  The Hera series will also provide precursor training missions for crews assigned to SHARP spaceflight experiments addressing all eight Major Areas of Concern.
